The Wave, Voyagers Gallery, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich

xxx wave

A new gallery within the existing Grade One Museum, adjoining the new Sammy Ofer Wing. The exhibition is intended to show how the collections of the NMM illustrate the vibrancy, diversity and
contemporary significance of maritime histories and the stories that have been created by our relationship with the sea. A dramatic audio visual show is played out on a large centrally placed sculptural wave, formed by a triangulated space frame structure.

The form of the structure resembles a 1970’s tubular space frame, with cast steel spheres to form the nodes and bolted splice connections. The crystalline form has an irregular geometry generated by an unfolded map projection, underpinned by a rigorous structural logic of linked tetrahedra, allowing the 25 metre long form to span and float within the gallery space.

The gallery will be open to the public in Summer 2011.
