This building was designed to the limits for load bearing masonry construction. The building regulation requirements to limit disproportionate collapse effectively prohibit new masonry structures having more than four storeys. Structural cross walls supported pre cast concrete floors, with the crushing strength of the blocks used increasing as loads travelled down the building. The external walls were of conventional cavity construction, using a combination of brickwork and rendered blockwork. The junctions between render and brickwork were articulated by incorporating steelwork into the outer leaf.
