Walter Menteth Architects won a full RIBA Award for their housing and community care hostel built on the site of a former munitions factory in Woolwich. The assessors for the competition (sponsored by the DoE, NHBC, RIBA, and RITP), commented that ‘this was a scheme of high quality, whose simple forms, clear planning, carefully judged window openings and bold use of coloured render combined to produce a calm, healing environment within a difficult landlocked site, displaying exemplary sensitivity to its impact on the surrounding housing’.
