Commissioned as a calming focal point within the gardens of a busy London hospital, the sculpture is intended to represent a well within space. Cast blue glass in gently graduating colours is supported by an integrated steel frame. The sculpture is 4.5 metres high and weighs in excess of four tonnes.
Our task was to develop a steel frame that was minimal in appearance, but stiff enough to prevent the ‘well’ buckling under its own weight. Each of the 600 pieces of glass can be removed individually for cleaning or replacement.
