Refurbishment & Remodelling,
Greater London House

Greater London House Greater London House

Originally constructed as a cigarette factory in 1928, this art deco office building had gradually fallen into decline until its new owners embarked upon an extensive programme of refurbishment. The involvement of Barton Engineers comprised the design of new service risers within the central atrium space, new lift shaft structures, a new entrance canopy, and foyer structures. The works are nearing completion after a two year construction programme, due to working around the building tenants in occupancy. The largest section of work, the service risers, comprise lightweight galvanized steel structures, hung from the side of the existing buildings, and clad in a PVC coated polyester membrane. Hanging the structure from the top storey of the eight floor building reduced the structural costs significantly because the resulting tension members were considerably lighter than the equivalent compression members.
